Timber Frame Element Combined to Log Constructions
Of course it is possible to built gable walls, bay windows, towers, dormers etc. from logs in all house types. But in a log building it is very important to consider shrinking and settlement of logs, which after all are natural effects of wood. Settlement of gable logs pushes rafters a little out. We handle this effect by using sliding irons and slidable joints. Very basic technology.
In the other hand are the demands of the assembly. When a house is very complicated; lot of dormers, many crossing roof ridges, the difficultness of building work exponentially rises. In these cases it would be a secure solution, mainly from a constructing point of view, to make the most difficult parts of a house from factory ready timber frame elements and avoid all sliding and settlement space joints. This is also a cost effective way. In a ready building, the timber frame elements will look like logs, because we cover them with same size log panels as the actual logs are. In a corner of two elements, log corner can be used to finalize the style of the house.
It easier for the builders to install factory made dormers on roof compared to building a dormer from non fabricated lumber, piece by piece in sky-high. Imagine how easy it is to lift on its place factory made gable element including ready places for bearing roof beams compared to making a gable on top of logs starting from sawmill raw lumber, measuring hights and widths on site.
Our machines can also make angular corner cuts for log corners, example for bay windows. When a window starts very near of a log corner the logs ends make a shadow or even come directly to into the viewing area. This can be avoided by using factory made bay window elements which allows the windows to start . And if your house will be built from very massive logs, you will actually save money in material costs by changing a log bay window to an element one.
We are the leaders of technology which combines logs and timber frame elements this way.
